My Review

So, I just finished reading it, and I have to say, I am NOT happy. I just wanted to share my opinion and see what everyone else thought.

Ryoki pissed me off the whole series through. In one way, I can see he really does care for Hatsumi, however, his arrogant and nasty attitude never disappears. I was trying to give him a chance thinking he would change or that Hatsumi would step up and grow a back bone, but obviously neither happened. Ryoki's character was ridiculously aggressive, and still is to the end.

I'm no major feminist or anything, but this manga basically portrayed that it is OK for a girl to take orders from a man, as that's all that Ryoki ever did when it came to Hatsumi. Sure he'd listen to her, but it was on rare occassion. It was all about him and it really really bugged me. From the beginning it was all about sex, and even though yeah he ends up having feelings for her, he only still focuses on having sex with her. Not to mention him trying to make her leave behind her family and friends. And lets not forget he hit her in the face, and pushed her down stairs. Had he grown a little softer, I might have been OK with them ending up together.

I was really rooting for Shinogu. Yeah yeah, he's her brother, yada, and believe me I'm not into incest AT ALL, but they weren't technically related and I really thought those two would have been happy together. Shinogu cared for her, always putting his happiness to the side for her. I thought them making him a monk at the end was really shitty. They could've had him find another girl or simply just move on. making him a monk was completely unnecessary. I heard Hot Gimmick S has Hatsumi end up with him, anyone know if this is true? If it is, I'd LOVE to read it. If not, I guess I will be looking for fanfiction.

Azuza....what he did (or almost did) to Hatsumi was COMPLETELY unforgiveable, but you could at least see that he had remorse for it and atoned for it you know? I wouldn't have minded if they ended up together either.

The only redeeming factor in this entire manga was the relationship between Akane and Subura. I thought those two were adorable especially that extra chapter at the end where she cosplays.

Anywho, overall, I'd give this manga a 4/10. Definitely wasn't worth my time.

Hot Gimmick S does indeed have Shinogu with her, but is a novel and not a manga.

On the one hand, I agree. On the other hand, a lot of other factors made it one of my favourites (and this is coming from a semi-feminist as well). I disliked Ryoki, yes, but loved seeing scenes with her and Shinogu. The ending was, for me, pretty dissatisfying because of that.

But I've read worse. coughInuyashacough
Woops, noticed you were a fan, ignore that last part. XD

hmm, I will have to check it out. It'll be a harder read without the visuals, but I don't mind,

LOLOL it's fine, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, so no worries bb!

Hot Gimmick S is a steaming pile of shit. Don't waste your time, seriously. It's not even written by Miki Aihara and comes off like bad fanfiction...which it basically is. It's horrible. I sold my copy to Hastings two years ago and it's still sitting on the shelf.
Sighhh, Hatsumi makes me facepalm. Admittedly I kinda liked Ryoki, but I would have LOVED him with a stronger woman that put up more of a fight against his issues. Would've been far more interesting to see.

..This is why I ship Azusa/Shinogu. No problems with that one.
ok, I'm new here...I just finished reading the entire HG manga series & also that of the HG S novel yesterday. Although the manga series wasn't that great (I would not spend money on this particular shojo crap) it sure was a page-turner and it was rather addicting. The concept is fresh, the whole be-my-slave-or I'll blackmail u- thing you just see really in shojo manga..except with some similar aspects to Hana Yori Dango.

I was ok with the main pairing Ryoki X Hatsumi at the end of the HG manga and I justify this by a scene earlier in the manga when Ryoki's maid, Mariko asked Hatsumi to never leave Ryoki because he's emotionally stunted, alone, never known having a family feels like. I think Hatsumi really considered that request(and took it to <3) and how Hatsumi says she can't fight her feelings for Ryoki and some other instances. I agree Ryoki is a major douche to Hatsumi throughout the manga.

But what made me angry in the manga is that it was a semi-major character: Shinogu Narita (whom all our hearts go out to). Its lame that just because he can't get Hatsumi and says he can't get over it, he had to turn to religion and be a monk.

It was also on this really sucky ending plot detail, that the novelist whom is the author of Hot Gimmick S novel, got pissed about and did something about it by providing an alternative ending with Shinogu X Hatsumi. Quite F&&*XXing obvious she was a Shinogu/Hatsumi fan. The novelist tried to hard to give depth to the story that it was just over the top, but the plot she used to make Hatsumi end up with Shinogu was realistic, but too rushed..it did not flow nicely,,, the story dynamics and pace of the story seemed force. I could in short say that I DESPISE with a passion the alternative ending in the HG S Novel< that was 2-3 hours of my life I can't get back, I should have stuck with the manga ending and not even bother with reading the novel.

Stupid me thought hey maybe Shinogu will get the happiness and not become a monk because he found love in Asahi Yagi. Thats right I ship HG's non-canon pairing: Shinogu X Asahi. I agree the whole Subaru X Akane is cute ( I <3 it when otakus find <3, but I dont care about this pairing much. My <3 goes all out to Shinogu X Asahi ever sinced the Asahi-character was introduced the manga, I just knew Shingou had to be with her, although::sighs:: didn't turn out that way. I prayed the novelist of HG S will address this issue, but she F&&*ing brushed it off didn't even consider the possibility and brought in this other bitchy female character as Shinogu's potential.

-mangoo XP (Continued in next post)
....Continued:
Getting back to the manga-side, as far as Shinogu becoming a monk, wasn't there like half a scene apge dedicated to Shinogu saying to the priest that he "had one more letter to write to someone he was concerned about"<<< BIG F%^%**ing plot-bunny, but hey guessed what HG's mangaka and HG S's novelist completely IGNORED IT!!. Just with this scene itself, I got my $$ on ASAHI YAGI whom he was gonna write that letter to. Well, thats what I would have done as HG's mangaka. I would have put a rumbling thought of the name (Asahi) after Shinogu's thought bubble-thing after that phrase. But with Asahi's name, popping up it will get readers to imagine all the possibilities that just maybe Asahi might be able to stop Shinogu going into a monk business someway somehow, romantic or platonic-relations, I mean c'mon how much you like bet Shinogu Narita is a virgin and will stay a "virgin-4-life" because he became a priest. That would suck! , he's a guy after all (yes, the manga stated quite clearly with the Shinogu-character confirming himself that Shinogu is not homo, sorry ShinoguXany-HG-male characters-pairings). What truly pisses me off about the Hot Gimmick manga ending, was that mangaka took the time to introduce the Asahi Yagi character even giving her crucial parts of the story plot, but this character was just left in the dust, even I rather Asahi was able to give Shinogu her love-confession and get rejected (<<although I hate the idea of it tremedously) then to have no form of closure on Asahi's relationship with Shinogu. You got to admit there was no closure on that and to me that is just aggravating. For those who say, but how Asahi gave the heads up for Hatsumi to pursue Shinogu and all that was closure, people that is not closure. That's Asahi loving Shinogu so much that she wanted to see Shinogu happy. On another pleasant and comforting thought if Shinogu did end up being a priest: I would ::guffaw:: XP if Shinogu ended up like a Inuyasha's Miroku character, not necessarily perverted as he and getting sweet on all chicks he see's that goes to the temple, but along the lines of Shinogu can't take not having some type of stress-release, so he sneaks in some Japanese-version of Playboy mags in his monk-in-training- sleeping-headquarters, and get caught so the head monks have no choice to bump him out!! He's a healthy college student near his 20s after all ::snickers:: SOrry Azusa-fans but I kept thinking how its more befitting for Azusa to become a monk instead of Shinogu, Azusa has issues and a bit of spiritual guidance and religion will help if anything. Shingo Narita's good looks go to waste in a monastery will be a blasphamy in fictional society!! I leave this discussion/rant/opinions with saying that this is the first shojo manga series I have come across that pissed me off so much and bothered me sos much that I will vow to write an believable alternative-plot ending where Shinogu Narita X Asahi Yagi will happen, spun off the manga plot bunny of " Shinogu's final letter to ??Who??". YA- friggin-Tta!! (P.S. no offense to anyone, but these were my personal thoughts and opinions that I wanted to share + I really hope I did'nt let out too much spoilers for the HG novel, if I did I apologize) -mangoo XP
Asashi was a terribly cliche and kind of ugly-drawn character. I'd rather have Shinogu end up with someone more hatsumi-like if not hatsumi herself, not a side-character that no one really noticed.

And anyone who says that relationships like the one in HG are normal is delusional. A large percentage of relationships are NOT abusive, controlling and manipulative and it definitely shouldn't be highlighted at all as a "good/normal thing" through a popular series.
Asahi, meh, can't remember her name*
simply because you dont like her probably..people tend to not remember names because they just don't give a damn...and thats simply fine because you are entitled to your opinions...but others will think differently..if you dont even have the guts to post a response as a valid Livejournal user...

oh and one other thing *Anonymous*, Asahi is not ugly mind you..but she's plain-looking..nothing special about her..the average girl with a unrequited crush...whats so wrong about that...and she is a side-character that has made quite a presence in the manga and novel...so whether you care about her or not..she's there..she friggin even found out about Shinogu loving Hatsumi..if thats not a big part/role I dunno what is.. I dunno why I even bother posting back ..but yes, if you can't tell by my tone your responses infuriates me!!....what a sneaky way for you to post... if you are so highly-opinionated..you must as well come out & say it rather then hiding behind "ANonymous" X(

I hope I never come across a Shinogu X Hatsumi fan in real life/physically/face-to-face..because I'd probably ask them why they like that pairing & suddenly out of nowhere then bash their faces in, figuratively ! ..thats how much I hate that pairing..
But it's supposed to represent a relationship, and most relationships are fucked up and dysfunctional.
I'm not saying every relationship is perfect because it's not, every relationship is a bit dysfunctional like you said, but I know if my boyfriend ever talked down to me or hit me, his ass would have been long gone. You just don't do things like that, no matter what the relationship is.
I don't know if I would qualify him slapping her as "hitting" for one reason; if only the characters of Ryoki and Hatsumi were reversed in that situation - there would not have been a problem.
I do consider myself to be a feminist, and men and women are supposed to be equal but different. If this situation works in reverse without causing a problem, then it's unfair for the guy. If you look at the situation that Hatsumi's sister put herself in - she was the aggressor in the relationship; yet I have yet to hear that she was abusive towards her boyfriend. (Sorry about the asinine lack of names, but my books are far far from me at the moment.)

If the roles were reversed, I don't think people would be sitting there calling a relationship like that healthy. He didn't just "slap" her, he forced sex, made her feel like shit, hurt her in a LOT of ways (dropping her, pushing her, etcetc), called her names.. was controlling, possessive, etc, etc, etc. If a girl was like that to a guy in a relationship, anyone would tell the guy to get the hell out of there.

That whole post just SUMS up my exact feelings.

I've had vol 1 for about five years now and I finally decide to finish collecting it. It took me a while to find it, but I finally found it at a used book place for super cheap and they had every volume but vol 11, so I spent all my money and bought it.
Now I wish I hadn't and had just stayed with my opinion of vol 1 where Azusa was amazing.

I absolutely LOVE these type of chick-flick, shoujo, girly romantic stuff.
But this was a big piece of let-down pie! (And I read it all within the span of two days...I should just just saved my money and read it online...)

The only thing that kept me reading was that she'd end up with Shinogu. I had been hoping for that for more than half the series! And since she only saw him as a brother I felt I could settle for her ending up with Azusa.
But when I got to volume 12 and she was BACK WITH RYOKI, my hopes were dashed and I felt that life was shit all over again. (I read this girly junk to feel happy and forget about my shitty life.)

And just like you, the only amazing parts were NOT EVEN REGARDING THE MAIN STORYLINE! (i.e. Akane/Subaru)

I just finished reading this like 1 hr ago and it's 2am and I have no one to bitch about this with, so I went on google to see if there were chat forums or something somewhere to see what other people thought about the story.

Glad I'm not alone.
(Did ANYONE root for Ryoki?)
